About Me

The Far Cry series has long experienced something of an identity crisis. It's a tale of survival, but it's also hard-boiled, or entertaining with flamethrowers. "A combination of both" is what has been suggested but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Far Cry 6 isn't a departure from this pattern although the flamethrower hasn't changed but the latest game does manage a lot to smooth out of the previous games, and is the series' most enjoyable in years. However, it is missing several steps, most notably with its updated inventories system that creates new challenges.

Far Cry 6 puts you again in a large open world, ruled by a charismatic madman. This time, he's from the fictional island nation of Yara. After playing a lot of games, it is still thrilling to try to change all the red spots in your map to blue. You can do this by either sneakily securing every enemy guard or take the less subtle way by firing bullets, Molotovs, at them until you have no more.

Primarily modeled after Cuba, Yara is ruled by fascistic dictator Anton Castillo, who's expertly portray by TV's most well-known bad guy Giancarlo Esposito. Thanks to his performance, he's handily claimed the top spot on my list of top Far Cry villains (with apologies to Mando. Mando). If it wasn't for the actual South American and Central American inspirations, his regime might be difficult to believe in at times. It's Esposito's unwavering devotion and admiration for his idea of an "perfect Yara" that makes him an unbeatable opposition to diaspora revolutionary leaders who you're trying to undermine the El Presidente regime and his associates.

Castillo's "psychotic navy Admiral", "psychotic Air force Captain", and "psychotic propaganda chief" aren't exactly the kind of group to be proud of.

Each of the scenes is captivating, especially during the exchanges with his son Diego. His father believes that noble goals justify the most grotesque ways. This creates a powerful tension, even if it is only one-sided. It's unfortunate that the end of the impossible quiz tale doesn't offer an enlightened resolution to the numerous conflicts that are introduced throughout - though Castillo remains an unforgettable antagonist to the very final. Esposito was the impossible quiz primary reason behind the movie's success, and the film's animation team should be praised for capturing the exact details of the performance of Castillo onto digital character models.

FC6 is clearly trying to be more responsible than the previous films. However, it does attempt to address some social problems. The script might be a bit off in some of these moments. However, it is stuck between a genuine representation of Latin American culture and an simplified version that is meant to appeal to westerners. Even though the world appears gorgeous, the film relies on certain colloquialisms to suggest it's trying to portray South and Central American culture. Or even more shockingly the script is basically Mortal Kombat for chickens. Legally, it is in Cuba.

In the past, Far Cry online games have mostly involved us in battles with pirates, the cultists and mercenaries (not to mention evil cavemen, mutants and cybercommandos), Far Cry 6 creates its bad guys as a properly organized and equipped army. It's a little straight-laced, due to the fact that the series' roots are, but it also provides an array of more varied and exciting encounters. Enemy Captains can call reinforcements and airstrikes to remove you from the sniper's hive. the Medics are able to revive their wounded friends and engineers are able to install auto-turrets. These are a great addition to your usual "shotgun guy", "molotov guy and heavy guy" list. They also give interesting reasons for prioritizing your targets beyond "who could shoot me next?"

Far Cry 6 also has the greatest record of turning cars, including helicopters into fiery steel. It's still very satisfying to clear checkpoints without making a fuss or raising eyebrows (this is how I played for the majority of my time) However, there's a distinct thrill in speeding down a highway and destroying a convoy with mounted machines guns as you blast Ricky Martin. Thanks to the huge arsenal FC6 gives players, it's even more exciting to blast high.

Far Cry 6 is one of the most entertaining shows that I've seen in nearly a ten year. The cast is strong and gives great performances and is a great story, Far Cry 6 is a fun tale with a predictable plot which doesn't always take the big swings. While there are issues with the new inventory system and some odd design choices it is a weapon with an unique design which makes it simple to destroy an entire outpost, raid an entire convoy, or even ride along with a companion.
